Natural Hair Extensions, Making Sure No Curl Is Left Behind
Every woman craves versatility when it comes to her hair and naturals are no different. Unfortunately, a lack of options when it comes to textured extensions has left many women limited when it comes to styling, but Angela Fité is determined to solve that problem with her hair brand Kinkistry.
Based on the premise “No Curl Left Behind,” Kinkistry offers clip-ins, wefted bundles, drawstring ponytails, and closures in seven different curl patterns from 2B-4C, ensuring a match for every textured woman. What’s particularly unique about Kinkistry is that four of those curl patterns are centered around type 4 hair specifically, which is often ignored in the beauty industry in a number of ways. Thankfully, Fité is closing that gap, with not only more kinky-curly options but also kinky straight offerings.
The other issue the entrepreneur sought to solve when she launched Kinkistry in 2015 is the lack of affordable, high-quality extensions on the market, which you could argue she’s succeeded in doing. A seven-piece set of clip-ins, for example, ranges in price from $110 to $170 depending on hair length (you’ll need two sets if you want to do a full head). Wefts vary in price from $105 to $160 per bundle, depending on length, which ranges from 10 inches to 28 inches, depending on the texture. In contrast, other popular textured hair brands charge as much as $249 per bundle and offer less hair type options. Having tried Kinkistry myself, I can assure you the hair quality is just as good, if not better, than other options on the market.
When work obligations called me to travel weekly for a month straight and be camera ready in each city, I turned to Kinkistry to get me through. Even though I opted for a sew-in, I still wanted a hair texture that closely matched my own, so I chose the Kurlnexis wefted hair, which is a 3a-3b curl pattern. I requested two 20-inch bundles and two 22-inch bundles with a 16-inch closure and took them to my go-to hairstylist to install.
The maintenance on the sew-in was extremely minimal over the course of five weeks. At night I protected my hair from snagging and tangling with a silk bonnet, and in the mornings I sprayed the curls with a mixture of water, setting lotion, and a leave-in spray to bring curls back to life. I preferred this method over using a curl mousse on the hair which added definition but also made the hair hard. Carol’s Daughter’s Pracaxi Nectar Body Builder Leave-In Spray, was the perfect solution for achieving fullness and definition while leaving the curls soft and flowy. At the four-week mark, I had my closure re-done to make it more flesh with my skin and natural looking, but other than a co-wash every week or so, this hair required very little, yet gave me so much (…life, time, you name it.). I’ll definitely be able to get multiple uses out of the bundles as well, which makes it another financial win.
